Install Android 6.0.1 MMB29K on Nexus 5X, Root and Install Custom Recovery-April 2024

Got yourself the brand new LG Nexus 5X? Get ready to adorn it with the first major Marshmallow update since the release. Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow factory images are now live. You can choose to wait for the OTA update or manually flash the factory images. Follow this guide to install Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow on LG Nexus 5X, root it and install custom recovery tool on it.

Prerequisites toupdate and root Nexus 5X Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow:

Create a backupof all important data on your Nexus 5X device.Download and install USB drivers for Nexus 5X in your computer.Enable USB debugging option by pressingMenu>Settings>Applications. Navigate and tap onDeveloper Optionsto ensure thatUSB Debuggingis enabled.Ensure that your Nexus 5X carries more than 80% of charge.

Note:Rooting your device voids itswarranty; please proceed at your own risk.

Flash Nexus 5X Android 6.0.1Marshmallow factory images:

Required files:download Android 6.0.1 MMB29K for Nexus 5X factory images fromhereon your PC.

Step 1:Connect your Nexus device using a USB cable and turn it off.

Step 2:Now, start the device in Fastboot mode:Turn onthe phone while pressing and holding theVolume Up+Volume Down+Powerkeysuntil you see the Fastboot menu and START text on top.

Step 3:Extract the downloaded Android 6.0.1 file anywhere in your PC. Go to hammerhead-MMB29Kfolderand copy/paste all the files to your Fastboot directory (which often is the platform-tools folder insideAndroid SDK directory).

Step 4:This step involves flashing the desired factory image to yourNexus device. Open the folder containing the Android Marshmallow factory image downloaded and extracted. In the address bar, typecmdand type the command written below and press enter.

OnWindows:Runflash-all.batOnMac:Runflash-all.shusingTerminalOnLinux:Runflash-all.sh

Once the script finishes running, your Nexus device will reboot. Once you are done, you can follow the instructions below to root your Nexus 5X on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.

How to root Nexus 5X on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow:

Required files:downloadAndroid SDKand install it. Set it up withplatform-tools and USBdriverspackage inSDK.DownloadSuperSU v2.60forNexus 5X on your PC. DownloadTWRP 2.8.7.0or CWM recovery tool and save it to theandroid-sdk-windows\platform-toolsdirectory on your computer.

Finally, downloadFastboot from the following links, depending on your OS:

Step 1:Extract the downloaded Fastboot file inandroid-sdk-windows\platform-toolsdirectoryon your PC (should be under C:\Android). Create directory if not already there.

Step 2:Connect your Nexus 5X toyour computer via USB.

Step 3:Copy and paste SuperSU-v2.60-20151205163135.zipfile to your device's SD card / internal memory root folder.

Step 4:Turn your Nexus 5X off.

Step 5:Enter the Bootloader mode: turn your Nexus 5X on while pressing and holdingVolume Down+Powerkeys.

Step 6:Gotoandroid-sdk-windows\platform-toolsdirectoryon your computer and open Command Prompt (Shift+Right-click>Open Command Prompt) and type the following command.

fastboot flash recovery twrp-2.8.7.0-bullhead.img

Step 7:Once done, enter recovery mode by choosingRecoveryfrom the Fastboot menu.

Optional, but recommended:Once you have a custom recovery installed on your Nexus 5X, it is highly recommended to create a Nandroid backup of your current OS so you can easily move back to it if things don't work out. Go toRecovery>Backup>Backupand Restore. These options are a little different depending on the recovery you are using.

Step 8:In the recovery mode (CWM or TWRP), scroll down toflash zip from SD card>choosezipfromsdcard.

Step 9:Using the volume keys, locate the SuperSU-v2.60.zipfileand select it. Confirm the installation process.

Step 11:After installation is completed, go to+++++Go Backand reboot your Nexus 5X. First boot may take a few minutes so please be patient.

Tada!Your Nexus 5X is now rooted on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. To confirm the root access, use anyRoot Checkerapp to verify the root.
