Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) is hosting a career day event today and that it is going to expand its Chicago Tech Hub adding 400 new tech jobs to the area. This will be a welcome event after the Queens HQ2 suspension earlier this year which saw something of a pushback against corporate power in its search for tax breaks and other benefits in exchange for bringing jobs and investment to an area. Something which Foxconn knows all about with its ill-fated Wisconsin deal.

The jobs will be in the fields of cloud computing, advertising, and business development. According to a press release; the company plans to expand its current downtown office space by 70,000 square feet as it plans to double the number of its tech employees. If you are interested in a job with the company and in the Chicago area today, September 17th, you can attend an Amazon Career Day event.

“The Chicago event will take place at the Vertiport Hangar (1339 S. Wood Street) from 11:30 am to 7 pm. The Amazon Career Day events will feature businesses across Amazon, and recruiters will be on-hand to talk to candidates about corporate roles at the company’s 18 Tech Hubs, as well as within our customer fulfillment, delivery, and retail facilities.”

The Chicago Tech Hub is one of 18 such Hubs in North America that together employ more than 20,000 people. Amazon estimates that is has helped to create 11,000 full-time jobs in the State of Illinois with over $4.4 billion invested in the state since 2010 and estimates 10,000 indirect jobs were also created on top of its direct hires. They further go on to state that they will be providing highly competitive benefits to their full-time employees with comprehensive healthcare, 401(k) matching and up to 20-weeks of paid parental leave. They have also committed $700 million to a program designed to train their employees in the required skills for in-demand jobs like cloud computing. The program covers 95% of the tuition for the courses of in-demand fields even if they do not translate to a relevant career with Amazon directly.
