Apple is rumored to launch a redesigned iPad Pro model with an OLED display next year. It was previously reported that the company plans to release new iPad models throughout the year. Henceforth, it is unclear if the company will release the OLED version of the device in the first or second half of next year. According to the latest report from a Taiwanese research firm, Apple plans to discontinue the 12.9-inch iPad Pro with a mini-LED display next year.
Apple's decision to discontinue the 12.9-inch mini-LED iPad Pro is a clear indication that the company will release an OLED model next year
TrendForce reports that Apple will discontinue the 12.9-inch iPad Pro with a mini-LED display next year. If the news has any heft, it indicates that the company plans to incorporate an OLED display in its next version of the iPad Pro. The report mentions that the shipment volume for the mini-LED notebooks will decrease by 39 percent year-over-year. Additionally, the mini-LED shipment numbers for iPads are expected to drop by 15.6 percent year-over-year.
Apple currently uses a mini-LED display on its high-end MacBook Pro models and the larger 12.9-inch iPad Pro. The report states that these are the only panel applications anticipated to decline. This is not the first time we hear details on the OLED model of the iPad. Industry analyst Ross Young first coined that OLED displays would replace mini-LED on the iPad Pro models.
Mark Gurman from Bloomberg also corroborated the news and shared an estimated release time frame for the device's launch. However, Apple could be amid supply chain or production issues, which has caused the device to be delayed from this year to the next. The OLED iPad Pro was rumored to launch in the last quarter of this year. However, Apple could release its new M3 MacBook Pro and 24-inch iMac instead.
Apple's decision to launch an OLED iPad Pro holds various benefits over LCD or mini-LED displays. OLED displays are more power efficient, which could continue to better battery life on the iPad. Furthermore, the color saturation is far superior to LCD or mini-LED displays with deeper blacks. It remains to be seen how Apple handles the screen burn-in issue of the OLED panels as users tend to upgrade their iPads years later, unlike the iPhone.
After Apple discontinues the 12.9-inch mini-LED iPad Pro, it will potentially redesign the chassis, as the devices are rumored to boast a larger display. In addition, the company will offer OLED panels on both 11-inch and 13-inch variants of the Pro, unlike the current models.
