Chrome Consuming Too Much RAM? December’s Update Promises to Use 50% Less Memory-February 2024

Google is planing to release a new version of Chrome in December, this year. The new Chrome 55 will give your devices some of thememory back that Chrome routinely takes away, as it aims to significantly reduce its memory footprint.

Google has been working to reduce Chrome's demands on your machines. The web browser, while immensely popular, is also notorious for being resource-hungry. Earlier, Google worked on lowering the battery usage of its browser. Now, the team is focusing on Chrome's memory hogging habits. In a blog post, the engineering team has sharedhow the upcoming Chrome 55 will include an upgraded JavaScript engine that reduces the memory footprint. Since modern websites thrive on JavaScript, the new changes willlead to dramatic improvements. The team explained that by tweaking the V8 Javascript engine and manually coding some fixes, ithasmanaged to achieve some impressive results.

Chrome 55promises touse less RAM,especially on mobile devices

Memory consumption is an important dimension in the JavaScript virtual machine performance trade-off space. Over the last few months the V8 team analyzed and significantly reduced the memory footprint of several websites that were identified as representative of modern web development patterns.

The company boasted that its test sites, including the New York Times, Reddit and YouTube, used 50 percent less RAMon average when compared to Chrome 53. These changes will result in abetter and faster browsing experience on devices that don't have much memory, and also when we are jugglingbetween tensof tabs in our browser. The team further said it'sworking to improve the browsing experience, especially in lightening the load for entry-level mobile devices that have 512MB to 1GB of memory. "Over the next months we will continue our work on reducing the memory footprint of V8. We have more zone memory optimizations planned for the parser and we plan to focus on devices ranging from 512M-1Gof memory," the blog post read.

Earlier in the year, Microsoft published test results showing how its Edge browser is faster and more resource-efficient than Chrome. Google's Chromium team has since started to focus on improving the browser and especially reducing its resource consumption.
