Google Pixel 2 and Google Pixel 2 XL Will Get 3 Years of Updates, Up To Android R
Google Pixel 2 and Google Pixel 2 XL Will Get 3 Years of Updates, Up To Android R-May 2024
May 13, 2025 6:38 AM

There are certain privileges attached to the phones that are manufactured by the company that invented Android OS. Yes, we are talking about Google's Pixel smartphones. One distinct advantage that Pixel owners have above non-Google phone owners is a steady supply of updates. And taking the trend forward, the latest Pixel 2 phones have something even better to offer.

Unlike other Android phones that come with two-year update warranty, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL have three years of update warranty. It means that the Pixel 2 phone will enjoy up to Android R updates. In a segment where some Android OEMs forfeit even two years of warranty for updates, we have Pixel 2 phones that will enjoy major upgrades up to 3 years.

The support page for the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL smartphones states that the devices will be receiving 3 years of OS upgrades. This includes major version upgrades potentially up to Android R and security patches. Google has confirmed the information.

For the previous Pixel and Nexus devices, Google promised the standard 2-years upgrade, which included two major OS upgrades and three years of security patches. It sounds like a short period when you compare it to iOS, but this is the best when we talk about Android (until now). Pixel 2 lineup has raised the bar to 3-years, and it is safe to assume that Google will follow this for all the upcoming Pixel phones.

The increased update period for the Pixel 2 phones also has a lot to do with Project Treble. It helps OEMs and Google to push updates faster. Project Treble can be explained as Google's first effort to streamline update periods for OEMs so that they can push updates to their phones.

Users should demand better software support from OEMs

Now that Google has launched Project Treble, users should demand better software support from the manufacturer of their device. In the end, it depends on the OEMs to act fast and make the updates available to the users. Many OEMs like OnePlus have been lagging behind in offering stable software support to their smartphones.

Can Pixel 2's hardware handle software upgrades in three years from now?

Regarding the Pixel 2's increased update period, we only have one doubt - can Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL's hardware handle the software upgrades in three years from now? It only makes sense that a flagship of 2017 won't be the best in 2019, right?
