Create a macOS Sierra Bootable USB Drive For Clean Installation

If you're planning to go ahead with a clean installation of macOS Sierra, then you definitely need a macOS Sierra bootable USB driveat hand. Although we did walk our readers through the process on how to create one when macOS Sierra was in beta a few months back, but today, we are going to refresh our guide with brand new steps, keeping the final build in mind. So, without further ado let's dive right into it, starting with the prerequisites.

Prerequisites

macOS Sierra installer file which you can download for free from Mac App Store:Download macOS Sierra Final from Mac App Store – Direct Link.A (minimum) 8GB USB drive. USB 3.0 would be preferred if you want the processto cruise atlightning pace.

Tutorial

1. Turn on your Mac and plug your USB drive into an empty USB port.

2. Launch the Disk Utility app. You can do so either using Launchpad or Spotlight Search.

3. Look at the pane on the left, you should see the USB drive listed. Click on it to see more information.

4. See that 'Erase' button at the top? Click on it. Leave everything as is then click on the 'Erase' button again to wipe the drive clean.

5. Now launch the Terminal either using Launchpad or Spotlight Search.

The next step is extremely important therefore read it in its entirely before going ahead.

6. Type in the following command. We would recommend copy pasting it so that you don't get it wrong.

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sierra.app

Strict note:There are double dashes in between which might not be visible in the above syntax. Refer to the screenshot below to see what I'm talking about. You have to type the command as is otherwise nothing will work and Terminal will constantly throw an error at you.

If everything was done correctly you'll start seeing a bunch of stuff in the Terminal window. Once the USB is done being created, you'll be notified by Terminal.

During the entire process will will not recommend touching your Mac at all. Just let it be and let OS X do its magic for creating the bootable USB drive.

Once the process is complete, you can either leave the USB plugged in, given you want to do something with it or store it in a safe location for use later. We will recommend storing the USB in a safe place for later use as you never know when it might come in handy.
