How To Speed Up Your Mac Instantly-June 2024
Jun 27, 2025 5:35 PM

Here's how you can speed up your Mac instantly with a simple flick of an option in OS X.

iMac

OS X is designed in such a way that it even runs great on older hardware. But if you have a Mac that is on the verge of being tossed into a museum, then you might have a problem related to how OS X performson your machine. Performance takes a nosedive especially when there's a lot on the display to render, and with OS X Yosemite, Apple introduced translucency effects to make the UI feel more frosted and modern looking. Those very same effects can kick your Mac on the shin, and if you turn them off, you'll experience an instant boost in performance system-wide.

You'll notice that those fancy looking translucency effects are now gone, but in return, your Mac performs way better than before.

Apps like iTunes, Messages and Safari will feel more responsive here on in. But on the negative side, UI elements will look a little bland. But hey, if you have an older Mac at hand, then you should be proud of what you've managed to achieve today without having to dish out hundreds of dollars for an upgrade.

With every release of OS X, Apple is pushing hard to make sure that older Macs are supported right off the bat, and that users aren't left out when it comes to receiving the latest updates from Cupertino. OS X El Capitan for example, is extremely light on resources and runs lightning fast even in its current beta form.If you have an old Mac lying around, then the chances are high that you'll be able to run El Capitan, but will definitely face performance related issues in some corners, and that's something which Apple can't fix either as it moves swiftlyinto the future of hardware and software. The only way around itis by using smallworkarounds, such as the one which we have listed above.
