How to Use Your Canon DSLR/Mirrorless Camera as a Webcam [Tutorial]-May 2024

Canon is among the leading manufacturers when it comes to cameras; whether you are talking DSLRs, mirrorless, or even point and shoot cameras, Canon's got you covered. With that said, considering how the global health crises we are currently going through has made video conferencing or video calling the main thing everyone is relying on in order to communicate, it is safe to say that people are dusting up their dedicate webcams or simply using what their laptop has. However, it is safe to say that we are all aware of how the webcam quality on most modern laptops is mediocre at best, and while it does not really matter to some, there is now a way which allows you to use a Canon DSLR/mirrorless camera as a webcam.

EOS Webcam Utility Allows You to Use Canon DSLR/Mirrorless Camera as Webcam

Canon just released a new utility called EOS Webcam Utility that allows you to simply plug your Canon camera to your computer using a USB cable and start using the dedicated camera as a webcam. While this is certainly an impressive thing, we are not sure just how much people are going to pay attention during your meetings, but for those who are interested in knowing how to do that, you can check the list of supported cameras. Canon has included a fair number of devices across the board.

It goes without saying, that is a pretty hefty list of supported cameras. It is nice to see Canon staying true to its users. Now that we have most of the things out of the way, we can focus on how to use Canon DSLR/mirrorless camera as webcam.

Start by downloading and installingEOS Webcam Utility on the computer.Turn on your camera, switch it to video mode, and adjust the exposure along with other settings that you wish to.Once you have dialled in your settings, connect the camera using the USB cable to the computer.Now launch the video calling software and choose EOS Webcam Utility Betafrom the menu where you would normally choose a webcam device from, and you're all set.

The software does support Microsoft Teams, Zoom, BlueJeans, and considering how it is still in beta stages, we can definitely expect a longer list of supported video conferencing applications.

To some, the idea of using your DSLR or a mirrorless camera as a webcam might seem like an impractical or outlandish idea, at best. But needless to say, if you are trying to up your video calling game, it definitely is something that you can try in order to achieve it.
