Intel 1st Gen Core Ultra Naming Gets Even More Confusing As More Meteor Lake CPUs Are Unveiled
Intel 1st Gen Core Ultra Naming Gets Even More Confusing As More Meteor Lake CPUs Are Unveiled-April 2024
Apr 1, 2026 11:31 AM

Intel's Ultra-Low Power Meteor Lake CPUs have been revealed which make the the 1st Gen Core Ultra naming convention much more complex.

Intel Meteor Lake Core Ultra 7 164U & Core Ultra 5 134U Feature 9W Designs But Weird Naming Choice

Intel's Meteor Lake CPUs will be available in various segments including the U "Ultra Low-Power" designs. These designs will be segmented further into the Meteor Lake U15 and Meteor Lake U9 series. Hardware leaker, Golden Pig Upgrade from Bilbili, has now revealed four new SKUs that will be part of the 1st Gen Core Ultra "Meteor Lake U9" series.

According to the leaker, Intel is planning to launch these low-power Meteor Lake models across four "Core Ultra" tiers as mentioned above. Moreover, to make things more complex, Intel will change the naming scheme in a way to represent respective power levels as well, for example, the xx5U and xx4U models with the latter being the U9 design. The leaked SKUs include:

Core Ultra 7 155U (15W)Core Ultra 7 134U (9W)Core Ultra 5 134U (9W)Core Ultra 5 125U (15W)

Now, if we talk about Intel's decision to introduce low-powered variants within the Meteor Lake portfolio, it is certainly a wise one given that markets have expanded to a much wider range of audience. However, this decision makes the interpretation of specific SKUs much more difficult now and will cause trouble for the average consumer. It should be remembered that both Intel & AMD changed the naming convention of their chips with Intel taking a more radical approach.

Intel hasn't officially validated the emergence of low-power Meteor Lake SKUs, but based on the track records of Golden Pig Upgrade, it's safe to say that Intel will release them at some point. Since the Meteor Lake CPUs will debut by mid-December, we will know for sure soon.
