iOS 17 Speed Test Comparison Against iOS 16 Shows Similar Performance But With A Few Hiccups-November 2024
Nov 7, 2025 11:55 PM

Apple released the first beta of its upcoming iOS 17 to developers for testing purposes. The latest update comes with a boatload of significant changes and improvements. However, it was previously observed that the performance of the iPhone tends to slow down after every major iOS update. iOS 17 is compatible with a wide range of iPhone models, and it would be worth comparing the system speed against the currently available iOS 16 update. A video has been uploaded on YouTube that shows the iOS 17 beta 1 speed test comparison against iOS 16.5 on older iPhone models.

iOS 17 Beta 1 speed test comparison shows similar app launch times, but stutters and lags are common against iOS 16.5 on various iPhone models

The speed test comparison was conducted by YouTube channel iAppleBytes. In the test, the comparison is conducted side by side. It takes into account the boot-up speed, app launch time, browsing speed, and much more. If you are interested in checking out the performance of the latest firmware or planning to download the first beta, then check out the iOS 17 beta 1 speed test comparison against iOS 16.5 below. The test is conducted on the iPhone XR, iPhone 11, iPhone 12, and iPhone 13.

The iPhone XR running iOS 16.5 boots up faster compared to iOS 17 beta 1. As for the app launch time, the performance is pretty similar on both versions of the software. However, we can see minor stutters and delays on the iPhone XR running iOS 17 beta 1. Nonetheless, the latest update is running quite smoothly since it is the first beta.

As for iPhone 11, iOS 17 beta 1 boots up faster than iOS 16.5, which is a major surprise. While the app launch time is pretty similar, we can see mild stutters and lags across the board. Overall, iOS 17 beta 1 takes a little longer to load the content of the apps where it relies on the internet. The benchmarks recorded in the video are pretty similar as well.

iOS 17 beta 1 speed test comparison against iOS 16.5 shows faster bootup times on the latest version. However, app launch times are slightly slower than the iPhone 12 running iOS 16.5. It takes a while for the app to load its content. Possibly, subsequent betas will offer different results. However, there are some instances where iOS 17 beta 1 performs better than iOS 16.5.

Lastly, the speed test comparison is also conducted on the iPhone 13, which houses a relatively newer chipset. It can be seen that iOS 17 beta 1 takes its time to boot up, following a few seconds behind iOS 16.5. The app launch times are again similar but feature slight lags in animation and transitions. You can check out the full video for the iOS 17 beta 1 speed test comparison for more details.

We should keep in mind that iOS 17 is in its initial beta phase, and the operating system is crawling with bugs at this stage. Apple will address the bugs and issues in the next beta build for all compatible iPhone models. The platform will be available to the general public later this year in September alongside the new iPhone 15 lineup.
