Microsoft Confirms Some Users Are Still Unable to Download Windows Updates – DNS Outage at Fault-July 2024
Jul 1, 2025 8:38 PM

For several days now, some users have been experiencing issues with Windows Updates. After multiple reports, it was finally identified last week that the issue was with ISPs and not at Microsoft's end. In some cases, the problem was fixed by switching to Google's public DNS. Now, Microsoft has confirmed that the problem occurred due to an issue with an external DNS service provider.

"The Windows Update service was impacted by a data corruption issue in an external DNS service provider global outage on January 29, 2019," Microsoft has said in an update.

"The issue was resolved on the same day and Windows Update is now operating normally, but a few customers have continued to report issues connecting to the Windows Update service. We expect these issues will go away as downstream DNS servers are updated with the corrected Windows Update DNS entries."

As reported last week, the issue mainly affected Comcast users in the US and BT Broadband users in the UK. Later on, British ISP TalkTalk users alsoreported problems. The Windows maker notes that some users are still experiencing these issues. While Microsoft has promised these problems will go away soon, users can switch to alternative DNS providers to work around the problem. You can switch to Google’s (8.8.8.8) or Cloudflare’s (1.1.1.1) DNS to download the latest Windows 10 updates.

Windows 10 is experiencing a slight block in the adoption rate since the (mis)release of Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) back in October. The company is also trying to push Windows 7 users to upgrade to Windows 10 as Windows 7 meets its end of service deadline in January, 2020.
