Microsoft has released the KB5005932 update to address a problem that was disrupting cumulative updates. The "PSFX_E_MATCHING_BINARY_MISSING" error was appearing for some users running Windows 10 version 21H1, 20H2, and 2004 when attempting to install the latest updates. This problem appeared afterinstalling KB5003214 (May 25, 2021) and KB5003690 (June 21, 2021).

Microsoft explained why this Windows update issue occurred for some devices:

This issue occurs on devices that have been scavenged automatically to remove outdated resource records.When a system is scavenged, the recently installed latest cumulative update (LCU) is marked as permanent and the older components are removed from the system. After scavenging is complete and a device is in this state, you cannot uninstallKB5003214 orKB5003690, and you cannotinstall future LCUs.

To resolve this kind of problem, the company said that you need an in-place upgrade that installs an operating systemon your device without removing the older version first.

Windows 10 KB5005932update does exactly that by offering a "compatibility fix to Windows Setup inWindows 10, version 2004, 20H2, and 21H1," Microsoft writes. "Thiscompatibility fix enables an in-place upgrade to be run on devices that cannot complete the installation of the latest cumulative update (LCU)."

The update is available throughMicrosoft Update Catalog andWindows Server Update Services (WSUS). Microsoft said that the in-place upgrade option is only available to devices that have been online for at least 30 days. For those on ARM64 devices, the in-place upgrade will only work ifKB5005932 has already been installed.

You can verify that KB5005932 has been installed by going toSettings>Windows Update>Update History>Other Updates. If your ARM64 devices do not have KB5005932 installed, selectCheck for Updateson the Windows Update settings page to initiate a scan.
