Nearby Share Can Now Work Between macOS And Android Thanks To An App Called NearDrop-February 2024
Feb 12, 2026 1:33 PM

Nearby Share is perhaps one of the best features that you can use on Android. Recently, Google decided to release a beta version of the software that allowed transfer between Windows and Android devices, and today, a developer has created an unofficial app for macOS, and guess that? It will seamlessly allow you to transfer files between Android devices and macOS running devices.

NearDrop is an excellent app for macOS that allows transfers from your Mac to Android using Nearby Share

The app is aptly named NearDrop, allowing your macOS device to receive files from Android devices using NearbyShare. Sadly, the implementation is only done halfway, as you cannot send files from your macOS-powered device to your Android device. The app only works on Wi-Fi LAn, meaning both your devices need to be on the same network.

The app can be downloaded from the GitHub page, and once you set it up, sharing it is as easy as you would expect on the native Nearby Share app for Windows or Android. Honestly, I am really glad that such an app does exist for Mac users, and this is actually a really good time for Google to release a native app for macOS. The functionality is already available on Windows-based computers and is an excellent offering.

However, if you are looking for macOS and Android device transfers, NearDrop is not really a bad concept. The best thing is that it works, and while it is only partially functional, I cannot wait for the app to become even better with time. Honestly, I love the idea behind it because it makes the whole process of transferring files seamlessly between two different platforms. Hopefully, the developer will keep updating the app and make sure that new features are added going forward.

If you want to try the NearDrop app on your macOS, it is available here. As for Nearby Share, the feature is available on almost all modern Android devices, so you really do not have to worry about it.
