Overclocking Any AMD Threadripper 7000 CPU On A TRX50 Motherboard Will Void Your Warranty

Overclocking your AMD Threadripper 7000 CPU will void your warranty on any TRX50 or WRX90 motherboard as spotted by David Huang (@hjc4869).

Overclocking The AMD Threadripper 7000 CPU Offers Huge Performance Uplifts But Also Voids Your Warranty

We have seen some mind-blowing overclocking feats with the AMD Threadripper 7000 CPUs in the past few weeks and the chips continue to dominate the workstation and HEDT segment with zero competition in sight. The CPUs & a few TRX50 motherboards are now available but it looks like the first users of this new platform are discovering that overclocking will more or less void warranties.

pic.twitter.com/mCh1bbeBZZ

When entering the BIOS of the TRX50 motherboards and enabling overclock support, you are first hit with a cautionary disclaimer that states that overclocking the AMD Threadripper 7000 CPUs is going to effectively void your warranty. This was also spotted by SkatterBencher in a very detailed guide of what's new on the TRX50 platform. He confirmed that enabling OC is a "permanent fuse" which unlike the standard consumer chips can easily be verified by AMD if a user did happen to OC and claim it under warranty. Upon enabling overclocking, your AMD Threadripper 7000 CPU will no longer be accepted for warranty if anything goes wrong.

Now this isn't something new as overclocking an AMD Ryzen 7000 CPU on the AM5 platform will also void your warranty. The company officially mentions this within the Ryzen Master utility and even enabling PBO effectively ends the warranty as AMD explains:

Precision Boost Overdrive enables operation of the processor outside of specifications and in excess of factory settings, use of the feature invalidates the AMD product warranty and may also void warranties offered by the system manufacturer or retailer.

With that said, all AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7000 and Threadripper PRO 7000 CPUs support all OC functions on both TRX50 & WRX90 platforms. The only solutions where you will see overclocking disabled are OEM platforms which makes sense. Only DIY platforms have access to overclocking & we should also mention that talking to certain motherboard makers, it looks like the warranty void warning is only for the Threadripper PRO 7000 chips and not the Ryzen Threadripper parts.

That's good if true since the bulk of HEDT consumers will be buying the Non-PRO lineup. AMD has some really strong motherboards with powerful VRM designs so not overclocking your chip means that you aren't utilizing the full potential of your system.
