PS4 and PSVR Both Surpass Big Sales Milestones
PS4 and PSVR Both Surpass Big Sales Milestones-May 2024
May 7, 2025 4:40 AM

The PlayStation 4 may be entering its fifth year on the market, but the console’s momentum hasn’t slowed at all. Today Sony announced the PS4 has surpassed the 70 million units mark, a milestone only a handful of other consoles have achieved. As a bonus, PlayStation VR has surpassed 2 million units – not as impressive as the PS4 numbers, but still enough to qualify PSVR as the most successful VR headset on the market (excluding cheap solutions like Google Cardboard).

Here are the full details, courtesy of Sony:

PS4 has sold through more than 70.6M units to consumers worldwide as of December 3, 2017.More than 617.8 million copies of PS4 games have been sold at retail stores globally and through digital downloads as of December 3, 2017.Based on strong momentum of PS4, PSVR cumulatively sold through more than 2M units to consumers worldwide as of December 3, 2017.150 titles have been released for PS VR, achieving more than 12.2 million copies sold at retail stores globally and through digital downloads as of December 3, 2017.

Here’s what Sony Interactive Entertainment chairman Andrew House had to say about the continued success of the PlayStation brand:

“We are delighted that so many people are enjoying the unique entertainment proposition of PlayStation 4 and that an emerging technology like PlayStation VR continues to gain traction. I cannot thank our fans and partners enough. Their support, since the launch of very first PlayStation in 1994, has helped to make PlayStation one of the biggest console gaming network in the world. We will continue to work closely with partners to maintain this momentum and remain steadfast in making PS4 the best place to play.”

Earlier this year, Sony announced the PS4 had sold 60 million units as of March 31, meaning the system sold an additional 10 million units in around nine months. Again, not bad for a system that’s over four years old. At this rate, it seems likely the PS4 will easily best the PS3s total sales (83 million units), and may have a shot at surpassing the PSOne (102 million).

Speaking of sales, Sony is looking to continue their 2017 momentum by offering deals on the PlayStation 4 Pro ($350) and PSVR Gran Turismo Sport Bundle ($200). These deals go into effect on December 10.
