Qualcomm Said To Be Developing A Custom SoC For Samsung’s Galaxy Lineup, But It Will Arrive In A Couple Of Years-February 2024
Feb 12, 2026 8:24 AM

The partnership between Qualcomm and Samsung is said to be blossoming, as a new rumor claims that a custom SoC is in the works and it will exclusively be found in a future Galaxy series. The San Diego chipmaker could be looking to extend its ‘Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy’ strategy by coming up with an even more capable solution.

Samsung’s dedicated smartphone chipset also said to co-exist alongside Qualcomm’s SoC

Where the Galaxy S23 lineup featured an overclocked Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, Revegnus has put out a tweet, stating that Qualcomm has bigger plans and it will not be limited to releasing a Snapdragon chipset with increased CPU and GPU frequencies. Though the specifics are unknown at this time, the individual says that a custom chipset will be developed for the Galaxy series.

He does mention that this new silicon will arrive in 2025, so if we go by the naming scheme that Qualcomm adopted when it announced the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, this chipset will co-exist alongside the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5. Interestingly enough, Revegnus implies that this unnamed SoC will be present with the dedicated Exynos chipfor the same Galaxy series. Judging by his claim, it appears that some Exynos versions of Galaxy smartphones will be shipped to different regions, just like before, with the Qualcomm variant likely being available for customers in the U.S.

Samsung and Qualcomm's collaboration seems to continue.

Were you disappointed with the 8 Gen2 for Galaxy, which was simply a overclocked?

Starting in 2025, it looks like there will be a chip from Qualcomm just for Samsung, along with a chip from Samsung just for Galaxy.

However, irrespective of which chipsets are used, they both are rumored to be mass produced on Samsung’s ‘3GAP’ process, which is short for 3nm GAA. Samsung’s second-generation 3nm GAA process is expected to start mass production sometime in 2024, so assuming that the rumor is true, this will likely be the technology the company employs.

For Galaxy in the truest sense of the word.

If there's one concern, it looks like both chips will use Samsung's process. Samsung Foundry's 3GAP.

Given the improvements exhibited by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 as a result of Qualcomm switching to TSMC, we are confused as to why the tipster would state that future smartphone SoCs would resort to shifting to Samsung’s foundry; perhaps this individual is aware of something that we do not know. Then again, it could be just another rumor that you should treat with a pinch of salt.

The custom Qualcomm chip is still a few years away, and by then, we could come across different versions of this story, so it is best not to draw conclusions immediately. However, the possibility of multiple chipsets existing for different smartphone families sounds interesting, so let us know in the comments on what you think.
