Quotacle turns all your favorite movie quotes into GIFs-February 2024
Feb 11, 2026 11:49 PM

Image used with permission by copyright holderThere are some people who speak almost entirely in movie quotes. Some of the quotes may be so iconic, like “I am your father,” that you don’t even have to have seen The Empire Strikes Back to know what it’s from. Others are a tad more obscure and you’ve either seen the movie or you haven’t. It’s easy enough to Google the quote and find its source, but wouldn’t it be so much more fun to see it as a GIF?

A new website called Quotacle is curating a database of movie quotations that is searchable. Once you’ve found the droids — I mean, the quote — you’re looking for, Quotacle shows you the movie’s name, where you can get it, and a video clip of the segment that you can turn into a downloadable GIF.

Currently, the site has 250,000 lines of dialogue from 143 popular movies. If you don’t see your favorite quote or movie on the site, you can recommend that Quotacle add it to its library. Even though the site is just getting started, it already has a lot of the best movie quotes in its library.

Quotacle’s library includes almost all of the Harry Potter movies, the Pirates of the Caribbean series, most of Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and the Lord of the Rings trilogy, just to name a few. It also has oddities such as The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Spaceballs, and other cult classics. Some movies have more quotes than others. The Princess Bride, for example, has a lot more quotes listed than Cool Runnings.

In the about section, the main developer for the project, Bill MacDonald, explains why he created Quotacle. “I made this website in my free time in order to finally bring an effortless yet comprehensive tool for movie references to the internet,” he writes.

The other half of MacDonald’s goal is to make sharing movie quotes easier and more natural by turning movie clips into GIFs.

“We reference movies all the time in real life. From Shakespeare to Schwarzenegger, we recite funny, sad, memorable, and inspiring quotes everyday. And we do online as well — however, it’s hard. Text has no style, no emotion,” MacDonald explains. “Pictures and animations have no voice. Videos are rare and difficult to make. So what is the easy, all-in-one solution to searching, watching, and sharing movie quotes online? I call it Quotacle.”

In addition to being a lot of fun, Quotacle is going to be a great research tool for BuzzFeed and other GIF-loving publications. So go forth and quote!
