Last years Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ are still very capable devices and can still hold their own against flagships released in 2019. While the cameras on the Galaxy S9 and S9+ are undoubtedly good, their low light photography prowess leaves a lot to be desired. Samsung addressed the issue with the Galaxy S10 series, which came with a dedicated Night Mode. The feature is now making its way to older devices starting with the Galaxy S9 & Galaxy S9+ (via Sammobile). We can expect it to make its way to older devices such as the Galaxy S8 and other mid-range devices in subsequent updates.

Apart from the Night Mode, the performance of the camera has improved. The update also adds Background blur intensity bar for selfies, just like the one found in the primary camera. On a similar vein, the background blur adjustment bar for the primary camera gets more 'intensity levels', giving you more control over the amount of blur you want in images captured via Live Focus. I haven't received the update on my own Galaxy S9+ just yet, but I can't wait to try out the new Night mode. It is unreasonable to expect Pixel-esque performance from the camera right off the bat, but there will certainly be some improvements. The Galaxy S9 series was the first to ship with variable aperture cameras and hopefully, that'll work in tandem with the new Night Mode.

The update weighs in at 574MB update comes with June 2019 android security patch along with some other minor QoL updates. It bears build version G965FXXU5CSF2 is now rolling out on the Galaxy S9+ Exynos model & G960FXXU5CSF2 for the Galaxy S9. The update is now available to users in some south-east Asian regions and is expected to make its way to global markets in the coming weeks. You can manually trigger the update by heading over to Settings >Software update, then tapping the Download updates manually option.
