Samsung Reportedly Shelves Bixby Smart Speaker Project, For Now At Least-October 2024
Oct 7, 2024 3:51 PM

Earlier this month, we reported about Samsung's big plans to come out with a Bixby powered smart speaker to rival Google Home and Amazon Echo. Samsung still has got much work to perfect its voice assistant's English version, even though it rolled out Bixby Voice for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ users in the US. In line with its slow progress on Bixby, the company seems to be dropping its plans for the Bixby powered smart speaker for now.

The report stating Samsung's plans comes out of South Korea. Also, an unnamed source for The Investor affirmed that “Samsung currently does not view Al speakers as marketable, as the global market is already dominated by unbeatable Amazon and the Korean market is too small to make profits.” The anonymous source also said that instead of coming out with varied AI based projects like smart speaker, Samsung is going to focus on improving Bixby assistant.

The company may have shelved the plan for smart speaker, but it doesn't mean that it is not planning to add Bixby on its other appliances. According to a report, Samsung could implement Bixby assistant into its other range of appliances like smart fridges. This won't be the first time when we may see AI implementation on household appliances, and many other companies have similar plans.

Plausible reasons behind Samsung's decision to drop Bixby powered speaker

The plan of Samsung for dropping its plans for smart speaker seems legit as the market is dominated by Google Home and Amazon Echo. It seems like the company is going to watch the smart speaker market for some time until it finds the right time to revive the project.Another reason behind Samsung's move to shelve the speaker could be that unlike Amazon and Google, Samsung does not have access to third-party music services.

As opposed to Samsung's view on the smart speaker market, a report from Global Market Insights states that the market for smart speakers is most likely to grow to $13 billion by the year 2024.
