NVIDIA's flagship GeForce RTX 4090 Laptop GPU can end up even faster than the 3090 Ti desktop graphics card when tuned in 3DMark Time Spy.
NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 4090 Laptop GPU In Razer Blade 18 Is Faster Than A Desktop 3090 Ti Graphics Card
Redditor, u/Kelzs, recently tuned his Razer Blade 18 which features NVIDIA's flagship laptop GPU, the GeForce RTX 4090. The GeForce RTX 4090 is without a doubt the fastest laptop graphics chip that one can purchase at the moment and it also costs a lot. The Razer Blade 18 is considered as "The Ultimate Desktop Replacement" and starts at no less than $4500 US.
Now it is well known that while the GeForce RTX 4090 Laptop has the same name as the desktop graphics card, they both share very different specs. In fact, the GeForce RTX 4090 has similar GPU specs as the RTX 4080 desktop but it is further slimmed down with lower clocks and a lower TGP target. But all of that is to be expected from a laptop GPU however the naming would make one believe the RTX 4090 Laptop is just as fast as the RTX 4090 desktop which I may repeat, is not the case.

With that said, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Laptop GPU is still an insanely fast gaming solution. If we compare the performance of the tuned GeForce RTX 4090 in 3DMark Time Spy, it sits ahead of the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti which was NVIDIA's flagship and fastest gaming graphics card just a year ago. What's even more impressive is that the RTX 4090 Laptop GPU peaks out at a 175W TGP while the RTX 3090 Ti can consume anywhere from 450-500W in the same benchmark test. The card is a bit slower than the RTX 4070 Ti desktop graphics card but even that card sips around 250W power.

As far as the tuning settings are concerned, Kelzs used MSI Afterburner to push the GPU up by +250 MHz and left the memory to default. The CPU was getting thermally throttled but the GPU cooling was good enough to push it for a higher score. It really shows just how efficient NVIDIA's RTX 40 GPUs are for laptops and their performance dominance continues within the mobile GPU segment.
