Move over Face ID, Vivo has unveiled a new 3D sensing technology today, with the company claiming that it is 10 times more accurate than the system that Apple uses on the iPhone X. Remember, this is the same company that unveiled the truly bezel-less APEX concept phonea while back, so it is certainly possible that Vivo might have outdone Apple this time.
Vivo Claims That Its TOF 3D Sensing technologyWill Be Able to Detect Depth Sensing as Far as 3 Meters
To bring up a comparison, Apple’s face mapping technology maps 30,000 points of infrared light to capture the user’s face, whereas Vivoclaims that itsTime of Flight (TOF) mechanism utilizes 300,000 data points to record the face of the user in three dimensions.
The TOF systems calculate the time taken by the pulse light emitted to return to the sensor. This allows it to map objects accurately at a distance of up to three meters. Vivo also said that this technology will provide new opportunities in facial, motion, and gesture recognition, AR, and 3D photography. Additionally, it will allow the smart devices of the future to do much more.
Alex Feng, Senior Vice President of Vivo, highlighted the company’s achievements such as the introduction of the in-display fingerprint scanning technology, the launch of the futuristic Vivo NEX, and the TOF 3D Sensing technology. He also pledged that the company will continue being innovative and it will discover new ways for AI in order to deliver a better consumer experience. He further stated that the combination of the TOF 3D Sensing Technology and AI will enable Vivo to open up new possibilities in the future.
The 3D sensing technology was showcased at the Mobile World Congress in Shanghai. The company has also made important revelations at the event in the past. For instance, last year Vivo revealed its in-screen fingerprint reader technology at the Mobile World Congress last yearand also introduced it in its smartphone range, something Samsung and LG have failed to implement. Keep in mind that this was the same period when Apple was unable to do something similaras well. However, as it was seen later, Apple left the technology behind and introduced its Face ID tech instead.
Vivo said that its 3D sensing tech will be commercialized but it will take some timebut here is something that we want you to remember;it remains to be seen if increasing the number of data points actually improves the security and accuracy of the phone. We’ll keep you updated on this in the future.
