The latest issue from "Xbox World reports" claims that XBOX 720 codename 'Durango' devkits were sent to developers last month which was packed with an IBM powered 16 Core CPU chip and a GPU similar to AMD 7000 series.
The prototype of the console motherboard was sent in a standard PC case to the developers, but the hardware inside does represent something high-tech and next-gen, possibly the machine which is expected to be released in late 2013.
The Source has suggested that that devkit is powered with state of the art IBM 16 core CPU, with an addition of and integrated APU the console will have a dedicated AMD 7000 series similar GPU working in pair with the integrated APU.
XBW Stated:
"It's a ridiculous amount of power for a games machine - too much power, even. But remember, Kinect 2 could chew up four whole cores tracking multiple players right down to their fingertips, so it'll need a lot of power."
Sources claimed that multiple developer's are looking forward to make a debut of their next-gen software in LA whether Microsoft or Sony are ready or not.
Why the need for 16 core computing power? Apparently the next version of Microsoft’s Kinect will be using 4 cores at least, due to being significantly more accurate and advanced to keep up with the next generation game engines. Kinect 2 will supposedly have the capability of tracking multiple players at once, not to mention precision, being able to track even fingertips.
A 16-core CPU design was built by AMD at first back in November. The chip was designed to be used in servers for applications that need a large number of threads, such as cloud computing but the growing hunger of computing power in gaming industry, a 16 core powered console seems to be a future proof investment.
