Apple Announces macOS Sonoma With Desktop Widgets, Game Mode, And Much, Much More-February 2024
Feb 12, 2026 9:45 AM

Apple has finally announced the latest macOS Sonama. This is a supercharged update for the Mac operating system. Sonama will launch later this year in the fall and will be bringing a number of top-tier features, such as the ability to place widgets on the desktop. You are also getting aerial screensavers, something that you often see on Apple TV. With the new update, Apple is also focusing on making iMessage better for everyone, and last but not least, Game Mode is also coming to the new OS. For those wondering, it works by ensuring that the game you are playing gets the most access to the resources so you do not run into hiccups while gaming.

The latest macOS Sonoma brings much needed upgrades to an already excellent operating system

The macOS Sonoma is also going to bring a number of improvements to Safari. You will be able to have a Profiles feature that will allow you to have a separate work and personal account, something that you have seen on Google Chrome. In addition to that, Mac finally supports web apps, which would simply allow the websites such as Facebook, Twitter, Spotify, Instagram, and more to appear as apps on the Dock, making it super easy for everyone to just go ahead and access the apps and websites they want.

Coming back to widgets, another great thing about the macOS Sonoma is the fact that widgets have become a lot more useful now and more powerful too. They can be replaced right on the desktop, and you can actually just go to the gallery and find the ones that you want and use. Apple has done some magic that allows these widgets to blend perfectly with the wallpaper while you are working on the said app, a feature I wish was available on Android. Apple is big on Continuity, and thanks to that, you can enjoy all iPhone widgets on the Mac as well, making the experience a lot better.

With the macOS Sonoma, video conferencing has become a lot better as Apple has introduced brand-new conferencing features that will let you present in a fashion never seen before. There is a Presenter Overlay available, which acts as a new video effect, and you can even go for Reactions if you are looking for something clever. The Screen Share feature has also been improved and now allows for an easier experience when sharing various apps.

Apple has always prided itself on Safari, and now, the company has announced some significant updates to the browser with the new macOS Sonoma. For starters, Private Browsing is getting a lot of updates in the form of advanced tracking and fingerprinting protection. Private Browsing windows can also lock when users are not using them, which essentially means that you can keep the tabs open without having any fear that someone will get access to them. Safari will also let you have multiple profiles, as mentioned before, a much-needed feature for those who use their Macs for multiple use cases.

Moving on, with macOS Sonoma, you are getting some really nice screen savers in the form of slow-motion videos of a number of locations around the world. For anyone who is looking for a stunning user experience, this is where you are going to get that.

Coming to my favorite feature, Apple is making gaming even better with macOS Sonoma as developers will be able to take all the benefits from Metal 3, and there are some exciting games coming to the OS, including DEATH STRANDING DIRECTOR’S CUT, Stray, Fort Solis, World of Warcraft: Dragonflight, HUMANKIND, Resident Evil Village: Winters’ Expansion, The Medium, ELEX II, Firmament, SnowRunner, Disney Dreamlight Valley, No Man’s Sky, Dragonheir: Silent Gods, and Layers of Fear. In addition to that, Metal has also introduced a new game porting toolkit, which basically rids off the strenuous upfront work and simply lets developers test out how their games will run on a Mac in just a couple of days.

For productivity enthusiasts, macOS Sonoma is bringing a new high-performance mode to the Screen Sharing app, which will essentially allow the users to have a responsive work experience, including remote access, hybrid in-studio, and remote pro workflows. You would also be able to benefit from low latency audio, as well as great frame rates.

macOS Sonoma is available to everyone through Apple Developer Program starting today, and the public beta will be available next month. Apple claims that the update will hit the stable channel later this year in the fall. You can get all the information you want about the latest information on this update from here.
