Only recently, Beeper Mini’s iMessage feature for Android phones stopped working, with the assumption being that Apple was behind this move. Shortly after, Apple came up with a statement, confirming that the service has been shut down as the company is concerned about the safety and privacy of its users, which can also mean that it will prevent any future versions of Beeper Mini from working properly.
Beeper Mini is not giving up, says a fix is coming soon to restore the iMessage feature on Android smartphones
A statement was given to 9to5Macfrom Apple, which stated that it blocked the Beeper Mini iMessage app on Android to protect its users. The program stopped working on Friday afternoon, but at the time, Apple had not put out a statement that it was behind this stoppage.
“At Apple, we build our products and services with industry-leading privacy and security technologies designed to give users control of their data and keep personal information safe. We took steps to protect our users by blocking techniques that exploit fake credentials in order to gain access to iMessage. These techniques posed significant risks to user security and privacy, including the potential for metadata exposure and enabling unwanted messages, spam, and phishing attacks. We will continue to make updates in the future to protect our users.”
Despite the latest setback, Beeper Mini appears to have an iron will and is expected to push out an update that will seemingly bypass any security protocol that Apple has put in place to make its iMessage service active for Android handsets again. However, it might be a tough road ahead because Apple has said it will continue releasing future software updates to protect its users. With the latest iOS 17.2 update, the firm introduced ‘iMessage Contact Key Verification,’ but it is not confirmed if it will provide any security upgrade to counter Beeper Mini.
“We stand behind what we’ve built. Beeper Mini is keeps your messages private, and boosts security compared to unencrypted SMS. For anyone who claims otherwise, we’d be happy to give our entire source code to mutually agreed upon third party to evaluate the security of our app.”
With the latest statement, Beeper Mini has pretty much gotten itself in a tug-of-war with one of the most valuable companies in the world, and given the vast monetary resources Apple has at hand, it will not be surprising to hear about a legal battle ensuing in the future.
