Apple Wants LG to Get Into the OLED Manufacturing Business for 2018 iPhone Lineup
Apple Wants LG to Get Into the OLED Manufacturing Business for 2018 iPhone Lineup-May 2024
May 6, 2025 3:50 AM

As most of you know, Apple has partnered with Samsung for the latter’s OLED panels for the Cupertino tech giant’s 2017 and possibly 2018 iPhone lineup. This marks the first time that the tech giant will be making a transition to OLED panels and the iPhone 8 is going to be the first recipient to feature the new display technology, resulting in brighter colors and better battery life.

Thanks to Samsung’s massive hold on the smartphone OLED market, Apple will have no choice but to keep a healthy relationship with the manufacturing giant. However, according to the latest rumor, the iPhone maker has plans to bring LG into the fold of OLED production.

Bringing LG Display to Mass Produce OLED Panels for 2018 iPhone Family Means Apple Will Have Greater Command on Pricing Negotiations

According to a report, Apple approached LG Display with the intention of getting the manufacturer to mull over mass producing OLED panels for future iPhones. Now here is where the problem lies: LG does not have sufficient experience in making small OLED panels, which is why you continue to see IPS LCD displays on the likes of LG V20 and the G6.

However, OLED-info claims that it is the sole supplier of OLED panels for the Apple Watch but in comparison to iPhone sales, the wearable’s numbers are extremely small. That being said, looking at the number of iPhones that are sold annually, LG will have to increase its production output and that will mean investing heavily in production facilities that can produce small to medium-sized OLED panels.

Though LG Display can experience a fair amount of growth in the OLED market by partnering with Apple, the California-based company also wants to reduce dependency on Samsung, like it has with several other manufacturers that supply it with key components.

There are few things that Apple is able to control and it is making sure that it can tighten its grip over that control. That would mean making its custom graphics processors and getting on with Imagination Technologies in the future.

Which company do you think is going to be the ultimate winner out of this future partnership? Let us know your thoughts down in the comments.
