Apple’s AR Headset To Feature USB-C Port For Data Transfer, With A MagSafe-Like Feature For Switching Batteries
Apple’s AR Headset To Feature USB-C Port For Data Transfer, With A MagSafe-Like Feature For Switching Batteries-February 2024
Feb 12, 2026 1:22 AM

In several weeks, Apple’s AR headset will finally take center stage, showing to the world the end result in the form of a head-mounted wearable whose development started years ago. Even though an earlier report stated that the product was still not ready for a launch, Apple has found a way to bring a small form of convenience for its potential buyers, though those additions are still not without their flaws. One of them happens to be a separate USB-C port for data transfer, along with the ability to easily swap out the battery for a new one.

External battery powering Apple’s AR headset is not only small but will deliver mediocre runtime

Let us discuss the USB-C port first; 9to5Mac reports that, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, there will be two separate inputs present on the AR headset. One of them will be for transferring data, which will likely be high-resolution content for wearers to immerse themselves in. This talk about data transfer can potentially mean that the headset will have internal storage, but there was no mention of how much onboard memory variants Apple will have available at launch and at what price.

More emphasis was placed on the battery in the ‘Power On’ newsletter, which would be connected to the AR headset through a MagSafe-like magnetic port. Gurman states that the battery size and shape will be equivalent to an actual MagSafe pack, but just because the cell is compact does not mean it will deliver astounding runtime. In fact, Gurman states that wearers can only expect around two hours of endurance, so to continue their immersive sessions, wearers will have to purchase a separate battery, and at this time, there is no word on how much each unit will cost.

So why was the battery not a part of Apple’s AR headset? Apparently, it was to make the AR headset lighter, allowing for a more comfortable experience. However, not everything has a silver lining because the battery will have a cable attached to its housing that you seemingly cannot remove. The round tip of the cable attaches to the magnetic port of the headset, completing the connection. The unsightly cable attached to the battery suggests that the same accessory should be available from Apple at an undisclosed price, and wearers will have to get used to this configuration, at least for now.

Some buyers might be skeptical over spending a rumored $3,000on the AR headset, but one tester claims he was ‘blown away’over its functionality, prompting some degree of confidence from Apple’s customer base. If you do not want to spend a small fortune on the first-generation head-mounted wearable, Apple has a cheaper successor in the works, but there is no launch date planned for that model since the first iteration has yet to reach the market.
