Create a New Test Partition in Mac for OS X Yosemite – How to
May 19, 2024 11:13 PM

Apple's latest OS X Yosemite, announced at this year's Worldwide Developers Conference, is available in beta for developers. Some one million public beta testers will be using this test version of the OS X launching publicly in the fall later this year. If you are looking for a guide to help you create new partition on your Mac to be able to test the OS X Yosemite 10.10, this post is for you. It would be highly recommended and certainly a good idea to use a separate partition in order to not affect your primary Mac processes and data.create new partition on Mac

Create new partition on Mac:

Here are the few simple steps to help youcreate new partition on Mac for your brilliant new OS X 10.10 Yosemite:

Turn your Mac on > go toUtilities>Disk Utility. From the list of all the internal and external disks, select your machine's primary hard drive -hint: it might be titled asMacintosh HD.Select the Partitiontab and click on thePlusbutton to add a new partition on your disk.Decide the size of the new partition you want, give it some simple and recognizable name to be able to identify it as a test drive.Once done, clickApply. After a few seconds, the new partition will be created on your drive.

If you are unable tocreate new partition on Mac, there may be plenty of reasons for that. Sometimes your machine can't create or resize partitions on your drive because of other processes making the drive table immovable. Encrypting drive with FileVault is another reason of why you may not be able to create a new partition.

You can definitely disable those options in FileVault and re-enable later on. You can also go to the external drive way. If your Mac supports USB 3.0 then it will give you a reasonable test performance of the latest OS X Yosemite. USB 2.0 will be a little slow. Thunderbold is the best bet which gives you very fast performance but you might not be having it around considering it's very expensive.

So try tocreate new partition on Mac from the aforementioned steps; if it doesn't work out, plug in external drive and test the latest OS X 10.10. Again, please don't mess up with your main hard drive and its contents and it would give you pain and nothing else.

When you are done testing - or when the Yosemite is launched in its final public version - you can simple open theDisk Utilityand click on theMinussigh to remove the test partition. Click and drag it to the main drive to regain the used space.
