Future Samsung Smartphones Might Have a Fingerprint Scanner That Fills the Entire Display
Future Samsung Smartphones Might Have a Fingerprint Scanner That Fills the Entire Display-February 2024
Feb 12, 2026 1:30 PM

Back in April, Samsung applied for a patent titled ‘Method for acquiring biometric information and electronic device supporting the same' at the USPTO and the WIPO. It detailed the workingsof an optical in-display fingerprint scanner. Unlike ultrasonic sensors, which allow the whole screen to be used a fingerprint scanner; only a small part of the display can be used with optical in-screen fingerprint sensors. That’s why Samsung has apparently come up with a new solution, according to its latest patent.

Samsung’s Latest Idea Reminds of the Vivo APEX, Where Half of the Display Was Covered by an in-Screen Fingerprint Scanner

The patent described an advanced FOD (Fingerprint-On-Display) scanner which will enable the use of the whole display for fingerprint authentication. This makes the process of fingerprint scanningmuchmore convenient. The patent shows two smartphone designs;one reminiscent of the Galaxy devices and the other featuring a notch. However, Samsung is unlikely to come with a notched handset and it is apparently even trying to embed cameras beneath smartphone displays to kill the notch trend for good.

The mere mention of a notched smartphone is not indicative of anything as it should be taken in the context of the fingerprint technology. The patent also says that the technology can be used in foldable smartphones. The patent describes a phone with two processors, the second being a low-power one that will control the touch sensor, the biometric sensor, and the lighting sensor. The brightness of the display will be increased from 200 nits to about 600 nits as soon the screen is touched to take a fingerprint scan. The second processor will handle all the tasks independently as long as the phone is sleeping to conserve power.

The phone will take up to three scans in nearly 700 milliseconds to verify a thumb impression accurately. The proposed fingerprint sensor combines the best features of the ultrasonic and optical in-display fingerprint sensor, making it possible to use the whole screen act as a scanner, even when the finger is dirty or wet. However, it is unlikely that this hybrid fingerprint scanner will make it to the Galaxy S10, which will probably rely on Qualcomm’s ultrasonic sensoror Samsung’s FOD solution.
