The Google Pixel Fold is finally available to buy in all regions and is one of the most expensive phones you can get your hands on. Keeping this in mind, one would assume that the latest and greatest foldable from Google is also durable. I mean, if you don't remember, the company did market it as a foldable with the most durable hinge. It turns out the hinge is durable, but the phone itself is far from it.
Even though the Google Pixel Fold has a durable hinge, the rest of the phone could use some structural integrity
Zack from JerryRigEverything decided to take the Pixel Fold for a test drive, and sadly, the phone did not survive. The entire testing process had nothing out of the box, meaning it was fairly standard. So, what caused the phone to snap? Well, the phone broke from where the antenna line is, and not the hinge itself. Regarding durability, the phone survived almost everything Zack put it through, including a lot of dust.
Another interesting thing that the video shows is that the phone can't actually withstand heat as it turns off. Honestly, I do like this feature, and I think more phones should offer something that can prevent them from overheating. With that said, you can watch the full video below.
Honestly, the Pixel Fold does look really good in terms of a foldable phone, but at $1,799, I would expect the device to be a bit more durable. Surprisingly, this is the first foldable phone I have seen that broke, not because of the hinge but because of a flaw in the construction.Another important thing to note here is that this is not the first time something related to Pixel Fold's durability has come to light. If you remember, we shared a detailed post on how the new foldable has a design flaw where the internal screen protector does not cover the entire OLED panel, and the exposed screen is actually prone to puncturing.
The best tech advice here would be to avoid buying this phone until Google releases a sequel or until all foldable phones become more durable. You have to understand that the internal screen will almost always be prone to damage since it is made out of plastic due to its folding nature, and risking a lot of money is definitely not something that we would suggest.
