The Google vs. Epic Games trial is still going on, and almost every day, we learn new information about how the search engine giant operates. Some of the information that has managed to come forth is pretty interesting. Today, we learn that the company had planned on buying Epic Games, yes, the same company it is currently in court against.
Can you imagine Google owning a majority stake in Epic Games? That is what the company had planned
Apparently, based on information from an internal email exchange, Google had plans to buy a controlling stake in Epic Games in 2018. If the company managed to successfully buy Epic, it would have made Fortnite a product of Google, and not just that. It would have helped Android as well as Stadia since it was released the following year. Looking at the idea of buying Epic Games, it certainly looks like an ambitious plan as it would have allowed the search engine giant to have greater control over games released by Epic.
Now, of course, Google killed Stadia, and the deal would never materialize. You can read the email below:
We are bringing a package offering to BC on Thursday re Epic. Spoke to Jamie and I think we need a couple pages about what investment could look like and someone there to discuss (based on whatever we can glean publicly). We just did a prep call and investment was the only way people could realistically think of to sway them on Epic’s approach to Android — because it’s easy to imagine us investing billions ant some ridiculous valuation (for everyone except for the corpdev folks).
Whether you are on the side of it or not, I am somewhat glad that Google did not end up buying Epic Games. Why? Well, the company has become notorious for the fact that it has been killing off its own projects, and some of them are actually very promising. As a matter of fact, Stadia wasn't the only lucrative project that got killed. There is a whole digital graveyard dedicated to all the projects that were eventually killed.
If Google had purchased Epic, there is no way to say Epic would not have suffered from the same fate, and for that reason, I am glad that it is not happening. As for the trial itself, I believe it has become rather obvious that Mountainview company does have a very strong hold over the market, and a lot of companies are trying to break it.
