How Much Would You Rate the Pixel 4 XL Design When Compared With Last Year’s ‘Notch King’, the Pixel 3 XL?-March 2024

With some solid renders from a leakster with a proven track record, we can safely say that the Pixel 4 XL design has improved considerably over its predecessor, the Pixel 3 XL. A trend that was started by Apple as the company needed to fit in a bevy of bezels for facial recognition, the approach was stepped up a ‘notch’ (no pun intended) with the Pixel 3 XL. One could argue that Google offered a dual-front-facing camera, but a look at these new Pixel 4 XL images would make you appreciate the company’s efforts even. It’s not the most stunning design in the world by any means, but if we were to give our verdict, it’s miles better than the Pixel 3 XL.

Firstly, and we believe that a lot of readers would notice this immediately; the notch is no more. It will be a welcome sight for users that were put off by the design, and it’s replaced with a uniform top bezel that houses a dual-camera, a speaker grill, and an earpiece. If the notch was a tad bit shorter on the Pixel 3 XL, we’d let it slip, but even for those that eventually got around to getting used to it, it would become an eyesore for them on a few occasions.

One other thing that we’re impressed with, at least when it comes to first impressions, is a significant reduction in the chin bezel. If you compare the Pixel 4 XL design with the Pixel 3 XL one, you’ll notice a stark difference when you take a gander at the bottom of both devices. The Pixel 4 XL renders showing the heavily reduced chin bezel pretty much competes with the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max.

We’re not entirely sure if Google will end up bending the OLED screen to achieve this, but we hope other manufacturers can take note of this. Huawei, as far as we know, won’t commit to doing this because the company claims that the chin bezel on its best flagship to date, the P30 Pro is there for a reason; it prevents unintentional touches.

Also, it’s not as if by removing the chin bezel, users would end up making compromises when it comes to stellar audio quality. If you take a look at the other renders, there are two speaker cutouts at the bottom, and what will make our day is if Google incorporates a stereo speaker configuration. The simplistic Pixel 4 XL design is maintained at the back too because if you notice, there’s no rear-mounted fingerprint reader.

Either Google will embed it in the power button, or both the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL will have an in-display scanner. The triple rear camera will open up a lot of possibilities for future customers, and while a single sensor on Google’s Pixel lineup can outmatch what most of the competition churns out, you cannot deny the advantages of a multi-lens setup. However, comparing the number of cameras of different devices and their imaging prowess will be a debate for another time.

For now, we’d like to know your thoughts in both the poll and the comments on what you think of the Pixel 4 XL design and if it is a major step up from Google’s Pixel 3 XL from last year.

Yes absolutely! No notch, no chin, a much-needed change indeed I prefer the notch and chin combo on the Pixel 3 XL Not much of a difference between the Pixel 4 XL and Pixel 3 XL
