How to Manually Check for New macOS Updates-March 2024
Mar 15, 2026 11:00 PM

Today we will show you how you can manually check for macOS updates running on your iMac, MacBook or even Mac Pro.

You can Check for Updates in Real Time on Your Mac Running macOS, Here's How You do it

Here's a situation - Apple releases a brand new macOS update and you go ahead to see if it's available for you. You open up the Software Update page and there's nothing there. Obviously, you need to keep on refreshing the page until the update shows up. But, you really can't do that. You have to wait a few minutes and open up Software Update again to check for updates. That's how things are. There is no refresh button here which you can keep on pressing to make macOS search for a new update.

Thankfully, there is a 'way' to check if there are new updates available whenever needed without having to wait a few minutes. Follow the steps below and you'll be up and running in no time.

Tutorial

Step 1. Open System Preferences

Step 2. Click on Software Update

Step 3. Software Update will immediately check for an update at this point and you might not see anything instantly. Click on Advanced at the bottom right hand corner

Step 4. Without doing anything, click on OK. This will refresh Software Update. If you want to refresh again, click on Advanced and then OK once more

That's all there is to it. You now know how to check for updates at your convenience and not be left on Apple's software mercy to ping the update servers.

Although Apple's system of delivering updates is great, especially if you have automatic updates enabled, as everything happens in the background swiftly, but if you like to take control of things on the refreshing end, then you might find yourself in a bit of trouble.
