Google Wifi is one of the many home WiFi systems that requires no adjustments at all once you've set it up. But of course, you have the complete option to tinker around with settings if the need arises. This includes the ability to change the DNS server too.

Out of the box, Google Wifi is set up in such a way that it automatically switches between your ISP's or Google's own DNS servers. It depends on whichever is working best at any given time. Personally, I've found this 'feature' to be more than adequate and keep things ticking like a charm.

However, there are chances that Google DNS might not work well with your ISP and your ISP's own DNS servers might be mediocre at best. If that's the case then you might want to set up and use a third-party DNS which you have found to work best for you. In order to find out which DNS is ideal for your network, you can use a tool like Namebench. It's absolutely free to download and use.

Here's how to set up and use a custom DNS address with Google Wifi.

1. Make sure you have the Google Wifi app installed on your iPhone or Android device. It should be signed in with the same Google account which you used to set up Google Wifi itself.

2. Launch the app and then select the 'settings' tab. Here's you'll see a bunch of options.

3. Tap on Network & General.

4 Select Advanced networking.

5. Now select DNS.

6. Over here simply tap on Custom and punch in the DNS address you wish to use. Make sure these addresses are correct otherwise your home Internet will be left in tatters.

Once done, hit Save and your network will be back online in a few seconds.

Remember, having a custom DNS will not make your Internet faster. It will only make things more responsive, given your ISP's own servers are extremely pathetic.
