Huawei Creates Trouble for Apple and Grabs Second Spot in Global Smartphones Shipments, According to Gartner-February 2024
Feb 12, 2026 8:44 AM

Nearly a month ago, market research firm IDC declared Huawei as the second-biggest smartphone market in Q2 2018 and now the research firm Gartner has also confirmed that Huawei has pushed Apple to the number 3 spot.

Overall Smartphone Shipments Reached 374 Million Units in the Quarter, Resulting in a 2 Percent Increase From the Previous Quarter

Garter has reported that the overall sales of smartphones to end users reached 374 million units in the quarter after a 2percentincrease. Huawei managed to sell 49.8milliondevices, earning itself a market share of 13.3percent, up 3.5 percent from the same period last year, while Apple’s market share decreased from 12.1percentin Q2 2017 to 11.9percent. The Cupertino giant managed to sell 44.7millioniPhones.

Even though Samsung managed to retain the number one spot, the situation looks glum as the Korean giant’s market share dipped 12.7percentin the quarter. The company sold 72.3milliondevices in Q2 2018 and captured 19.3percentof the market. The harrowing situation can be explained by increasing competition from Chinese manufacturers, the bearish smartphone market, and the decreasing demand for Samsung’s flagships.

Huawei achieved a remarkable feat by achieving sales growth of 38.6percentin a declining smartphone market. Huawei is catering to larger consumer segments with its price friendly Honor devices and high-end mobile phones such as the P20 Pro. Huawei’s sub-brand Honor is serving 70 markets worldwide and has proven to be a major contributor tothe tech giant’ssales.

Apple achieved a flat growth rate of 0.9percentin the quarter but it is not surprising as the company releases its smartphones infall, just before the holiday quarter. However, Apple is under constant pressure from Chinese brands which provide stiff competition by introducing flagship-level features at very attractive prices. Even though iPhone X was the key contributor to revenue, its demand slowed down much earlier than when other new iPhones were introduced and this can be a cause of concern for Apple.

The fourth spot was clinched by Xiaomi which managed to increase its market share from 5.8percentin Q2 2017 to 8.8percentthis year after selling 32.8milliondevices.The report also revealed that the duopoly in the operating system market continues, with Android bagging 88percentmarket share, and iOS securing 11.9percent.
