Apple's iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models are notably faster than last year's iPhone 14 Pro models. While Apple reserved the A17 Pro chip for the iPhone 15 Pro models, the entire lineup features Qualcomm's latest X70 modem chip. The new modem chip allows for faster download speeds on the iPhone 15 models, up to 54 percent faster than last year's iPhone 14 models.
iPhone 15 beats Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 5 in new download speed test
The download speed test was conducted by Ookla, confirming that the iPhone 15 models are significantly faster than the iPhone 14 lineup. The source collected data from its online Speedtest to identify and detect precise connection speeds. In its results, Ookla revealed that the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models feature 54 percent better download speeds than last year's flagships.
According to the test, the iPhone 15 Plus was 54 percent faster, and the iPhone 15 had 45 percent faster download speeds than their respective models from last year. In contrast, the iPhone 15 Pro Max was 27 percent faster than the iPhone 14 Pro Max, while the iPhone 15 Pro was 25 percent better than iPhone 14 Pro. Altogether, the iPhone 15 models were the fastest and ranked at the top in terms of fastest download speeds on a smartphone.
Besides the latest iPhone 15 models, Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 5 takes fifth position in the median download speed test. The iPhone 14 Pro rests between the Galaxy Fold 5 and Galaxy Fold 4. Additionally, the iPhone 15 had the slowest median download speed out of the entire lineup, coming in at 249mbps. However, the device was still faster than Samsung's latest Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5.

While the test puts Apple on top, a few factors must be considered. For instance, the median speed test is measured across the United States and can be lower or higher in different regions. It also depends on the location of the cellular tower, carrier, and more. Ookla conducted the test between September 22 and October 22.
The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro have faster download speeds against the competition, all thanks to Qualcomm's X70 modem chip. Last year, the iPhone 14 lineup featured Qualcomm's X65 modem, and the X70 modem is significantly faster. The faster download speeds on the iPhone 15 models are also improved in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, India, Spain, France, UAE, and the UK. You can check the results list on Ookla's website for additional information.
Apple will announce its new iPhone 16 lineup next year, and it remains to be seen if the company will further improve the download speeds. Apple is also working on its custom modem for future iPhone models. However, it is unclear when the company will see fit to announce its in-house modems.
