iPhone 15 Lineup To Feature Wider Aperture, Allowing More Light To Enter, Along With Glass & Plastic Lens Technology
iPhone 15 Lineup To Feature Wider Aperture, Allowing More Light To Enter, Along With Glass & Plastic Lens Technology-February 2024
Feb 12, 2026 9:37 AM

The iPhone 15 is getting a major bump in camera specifications, with even the base models reportedly featuring a primary 48MP sensor. However, Apple is also said to add a wider aperture to its four models, with a tipster claiming that the company will adopt a hybrid lens technology to its upcoming flagship family.

The new upgrades arriving to the iPhone 15 models will be expanded to the iPhone 16 lineup too

Coming to the aperture details, MacRumorsspotted one of RGcloudS’ tweets, in which the individual claims that the iPhone 15’s main camera will have an F/1.7 aperture, which will be slightly wider than the F/1.79 unit present on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. However, it should be noted that the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus have an even wider aperture of F/1.5, so it is possible that the non-Pro models launching later this year offer something substantial.

Next, the tipster states that Apple will use a hybrid lens technology for the iPhone 15 series. For those who do not know, a hybrid lens comprises of both plastic and glass, with a 7P configuration rumored to be used on the upcoming lineup. Going in-depth, what this means is that there will be a single glass element and six plastic elements used in the lens. The tipster does not mention why Apple is switching to hybrid lens technology, but it is stated in the tweet that the same lens will be used in the iPhone 16 family.

iPhone 15 getting some serious camera upgrades

It is possible that this technology is used to bring production costs down, but on this occasion, a wider aperture will be viewed as the more important upgrade in this rumor simply because a wider aperture allows more light to pass through, enabling higher-quality images to be taken, especially in low-light environments. Despite the fact that the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are expected to use the same 48MP sensoras their direct predecessors, the tweet mentions that the wider aperture will allow more light to be captured by the camera.

In case someone missed out on the following, the iPhone 15 Pro Max is said to be the only model from the entire lineup to feature a periscope zoom lens, with support of up to 6x lossless magnification. We are sure Apple will showcase some camera samples during its official announcement, so we will see what improvements have arrived later in the year.
