LG has reportedly started to reap the rewards of partnering with Apple to supply the latter with its OLED and LCD screen units for the upcoming 2018 iPhone family. The LCD screens will most likely be for the 6.1-inch iPhone 9 that is expected to be announced alongside the more premium models.

LG will reportedly be providing Apple with a total of 24 million panels that will comprise up of both OLED and LCD. Certainly, this number is not close to the output capacity that Samsung is able to churn out but it does provide Apple with a stepping stone to bring in more suppliers on board and reduce the monopoly of Samsung.

LG Display to Provide Around 4 million OLED units and 20 Million LCD Screens for the Upcoming iPhone Lineup

LG is definitely lagging behind Samsung when it comes to OLED output capacity but that is expected to increase in the foreseeable future as the Korean manufacturer eyes future expansion. According to a Korea-based Newspim report, LG Display is expected to ship 3-4 million OLED panels as well as 20 million LCD smartphone panels to Apple in 2018, which also added that the manufacturer will produce the OLED panels needed for the iPhone from its E6 6G fabrication plant located in Paju.

Along with the improving yield rate at the E6 plant, LG Display is likely to secure the majority of 6.5-inch OLED panel orders from Apple in 2019 and therefore will ramp up its OLED panel shipments to 10 million units in the year, something that was also mentioned in the report. While 10 million is still not a massive upgrade compared to what Samsung will be providing to Apple, small steps will be required to take away the exclusivity that the tech giant had during the 2017 period.

The deal will also help LG Display improve its financial constraints, said the report, noting that the company posted a net loss of $87.04 million USD during the first quarter of 2018.
