The iPhone lineup revealed this year turned out to be quite a surprise, largely because of the camera improvementsand the starting price. The phones are reportedly doing so well in the market that Apple is ramping up supply. The relatively affordable iPhone 11 carries a price tag of $699, which is $50 less than what the iPhone XR was going for when it wasfirstreleased. Also, if you trade in your older iPhone, you can save even more money,but how many iPhone owners are actually willing to do that?Only a minority, it seems, according to the latest survey.

According to a survey conducted for PCMag, only 18 percent of U.S. iPhone owners plan to upgrade to one of the newer models. Apparently, even at a starting price of $699, the newer iPhones are deemed unworthy of an upgrade. The sweet spot seems to be $599, with a whopping 61 percent of the users saying they don’t want to splurge more than that on a new phone.

From the current range, the iPhone 8 seems to give the most ‘bang for the buck’ at its starting price of $449, with 43 percent of the owners saying they find the price acceptable. On the other hand, only 17 percent of the participants are willing to shell out $999 or more on the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max.

Moreover, customers now hold on to their older phones for longer, with 42 percent of the 650 surveyed users saying they stick to the same phone for more than three years. Only 7 percent of the participants said they upgrade their device every year.

So, what will it take to get consumers to upgrade? For 37 percent of the users, deteriorating battery life of their current devices is a chief concern and the latest range is actually excellent in this regard. However, we think that the chances are that most people will make do with their current devices or upgrade to the rumored iPhone SE 2 while they wait for the 5G-enabled iPhone, which will apparently be called the iPhone 12lineup.
