The next-generation GPD Win Max handheld gaming PC has leaked out & will be powered by AMD's Ryzen 7 7840U "Phoenix" APU.

AMD Ryzen 7 7840U "Phoenix" Seems To Be Powering GPD's Next-Gen Win Max Handheld Gaming PC With Zen 4 & RDNA 3 Cores

Based on a leak within Geekbench 5 & BAPCO, it looks like GPD has started testing its next-gen PC that will utilize AMD's latest APU hardware. The GPD Win Max 2 came in both AMD & Intel flavors & while we cannot say for sure if an Intel flavor will be available this time, it is pretty much confirmed that the company will introduce its next-gen handheld with the latest AMD APUs running a Phoenix design.

The AMD Ryzen 7 7840U is another Ryzen 7040U Phoenix APU which is designed for the 15-28W laptop designs. This CPU carries 8 cores and 16 threads based on the Zen 4 core architecture and also packs a Radeon 780M iGPU that utilizes the RDNA 3 graphics architecture. The GPU side has 12 compute units for a total of 768 cores and those will run well above the 2.5 GHz frequency. The APU has already been seen running in various benchmarks and packs a punch even at its 28W TDP design. Meanwhile, the RDNA 3 iGPU puts up a good fight with the RTX 2050 and GTX 1650 Ti GPUs for laptops.

The BAPCO listing shows that the GPD Win Max handheld gaming PC was using 16 GB of LPDDR5 memory running at 7500 MB/s transfer rates. The screen seems to be a 1920x1080 panel though it's unknown if the size and dimensions of the device have changed compared to the previous one which had a 10.1-inch Bezel-less screen. One can expect the console to feature an active cooling solution that will really help when switching to the higher TDP mode though the AMD Phoenix U-series are some of the most efficient chips on the market and users would definitely enjoy higher battery times.

Other than that, the performance numbers mentioned are nothing to go by since the next-gen GPD Win Max handheld gaming PC still seems to be in the early testing stage. There is a range of Phoenix & other AMD APU-powered handhelds coming this year so the battle is going to be just as heated as ever.
