Pixel 4, Pixel 4 XL Were Supposed to Get 4K 60FPS Video Recording but Google Pulled the Option Before Release-February 2024
Feb 12, 2026 3:10 AM

While Google’s latest flagships might have impressive photography prowess, they don’t offer the one thing that most other premium smartphones on the market feature. We are talking about the fact that Pixel 4 video recording is limited to 4K 30FPS and apparently, this was a last-minute decision on Google’s part.

Google Originally Stated That the Pixel 4’s Video Recording Option Is Limited to 4K 30FPS as It Allows the Company to Focus More on Quality

According to XDA’s Mishaal Rahman, hestumbled upon code that shows that Google had enabled 4K60FPSvideo shooting on the fourth-generation Pixel smartphones initially. However, the changes were later reverted and the code snippets do not have any comments which can explain this decision regarding the Pixel 4 video recording.

This implies that the phone’s hardware is actually capable of shooting 4Kvideo at 60FPSand this makes us wonder if a future software rollout will enable this feature. However, it could be that this mode was pulled because Google wasn’t satisfied with the video quality or it heated up the phoneduring the testing phase.

According to Google, the Pixel 4’svideo recording is restricted to 4K30FPSbecause enabling the 60FPS option would cause nearly half a gigabyte of storage to be used up per minute. Since the phone only comes with a base storage variant of 64GB and can go only as high as 128GB, the internal memory would have been used up pretty quickly with 4K60FPSfootage.

Oh boy, this one will stir some controversy...Google had enabled 4k@60fps video recording for the Pixel 4, but pulled it before release.

It doesn’t help that the phone doesn’t have a memory card slot and that Google no longer offers free original-quality storage for media. Moreover, the internet giant also thinks most people go for 1080pvideo recording, so it concentrated its efforts on improving this mode.

For comparison, even the iPhone 11’s front camera can shoot 4Kvideos at 60FPS, so Pixel 4’svideo recording options are kind of a letdown. Sure, it might not matter much to an average user, but those who want to record high-quality videos, this phone might not be the ideal choice. Is lack of a 4K60FPSvideo option on the Pixel 4 a deal-breaker for you?
