Samsung Galaxy S10 in-Display Fingerprint Reader Is Present in All Models, but Which Ones Will Get the More Advanced Sensor?-June 2024

In-screen fingerprint scanners are expected to hog the limelight in the smartphone market for 2019. Keeping up with the trends, the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S10 is expected to feature an in-display fingerprint sensor too.Contrary to previous reports, all three variants of the Galaxy S10 will sport this next-generation biometric addition, though earlier reports had suggested that the lower-end variant of the Galaxy S10 will have a physical fingerprint sensor.

The Two Top-End Galaxy S10 Will Feature the More Advanced Ultrasonic Fingerprint Reader

According to an insider from the display industry, the entry-level model of the Galaxy S10 will also sport an in-display fingerprint sensor. However, to keep the costsdownas much as possible, this particular model will have an optical fingerprintreader, while the successors to the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus will feature ultrasonic in-screen fingerprint scanners. Qualcomm, which announced the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor in 2015, is expected to provide the scanners to Samsung.

Ultrasonic fingerprint technology works by creating a 3D mapped fingerprint as opposed to the flat image used by an optical scanner, which remains the widest user fingerprint sensor for high-end smartphones. The enhanced 3D reproduction helps ultrasonic sensors to accurately reproduce fingerprint because of the additional data collected. On the other hand, the optical fingerprint sensor works more like a camera as it merely captures a two-dimensional picture of the fingerprint. Not only can this system be easily gamed, it can also be hampered by sweat, light, and grease.

However, these disadvantages do not demerit the use of optical scanners as they work just fine in the majority of the cases. A lot of Chinese OEMs including Huawei and Vivo have already released smartphones with this technology as it is nearly three times cheaper than ultrasonic sensors.

Samsung was reportedly planning to incorporateoptical in-screen fingerprint scanners made by Synaptics in the Galaxy S8 lineup but ended up abandoning the idea as the technology was half-baked at that time. Market leaders such as Apple and Samsung are usually apprehensive about implementing a technology that hasn’t been perfected as it can affect their brand imageand rightly so.

With the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus not performing well in the market, Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S10 will be there to save the day, but can the addition of an ultrasonic fingerprint reader do wonders for the Korean giant’s sales performance? Why don’t you tell us down in the comments?
