Apple is reportedly working on a second-gen Apple Watch Ultra with a microLED display. The wearable was expected to be announced next year, but the company has now pushed the launch to the second half of 2025. The Apple Watch Ultra is the company's latest smartwatch with a boatload of features stretching beyond the boundaries of the standard models. It will be interesting to see what benefits microLED displays bring to the table with the second-gen model.

Apple delays second-gen Apple Watch Ultra with microLED Display to 2025

The news is shared by display analyst Ross Young on Twitter. suggesting that Apple will see fit to launch the second-gen Apple Watch Ultra with a microLED display in the second half of 2025. It was previously coined by several sources that Apple will announce the device in 2024, potentially by the end of the year. There are no details available as to why the company is looking to delay the launch.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman previously suggested that Apple might see fit to launch the Apple Watch Ultra's successor by the end of next year. It seems the company is either encountering issues with the display design and manufacturing or sourcing materials from suppliers. All in all, the wearable has been pushed back and is expected to arrive in 2H25. Ross Young did not highlight the exact time frame of the launch as well.

Apple Watch Ultra microLED Display Launch Delay

All Apple Watch models are currently equipped with an OLED display. The company's shift to microLED panels may offer a wide range of advantages. For instance, the wearable will be able to achieve higher brightness levels. Additionally, the panel would also allow a more consistent color output. Furthermore, the display is also less power-hungry compared to the traditional OLED panels, which would result in better battery life. On a wearable device, battery life is one of the major concerns, and a microLED display on the Apple Watch Ultra might be the right way to go.

The inclusion of a microLED display in the second-generation Apple Watch Ultra is the company's plan to transition to its custom displays. Apple is emerging as a major contender in the market as it also plans to make the technology available for the iPhone and other products. Take note that these are mere speculations, and the final word rests with Apple. We will share more details on the subject as soon as further information is available.
