OpenAI's ChatGPT is all the rage today, and Snapchat is the latest name to be jumping on this bandwagon. Honestly, I did not think of Snapchat bringing AI integration. Other messaging apps, such as WhatsApp or Telegram, seemed more likely to incorporate AI assistance, but here we are with My AI, Snapchat's AI chatbot that will be available later this week but only for paid subscribers.
Snapchat launches an AI-powered chatbot based on ChatGPT but advises everyone not to share secrets or rely on the advice given by its new My AI
So, why does Snapchat need AI in the first place? Well, the company announced it today and talked about how ChatGPT has been customized for Snapchat, and while it is still an experimental feature, we feel that it is here to stay. Snapchat believes My AI is great for getting birthday gift ideas, poetry, recipes, and even planning trips. You can also customize the AI by adding a custom wallpaper.
However, the company has issued a warning, and considering just how shoddy AI can be, it's better the warning is there. For instance, Snapchat has mentioned that one should avoid sharing any secrets with My AI and nor should take any advice from it. This is mainly because of the general strange behavior displayed by AI chatbots. The real point of concern is that the company will be storing all the information taken from My AI and will be reviewing it to improve the experience.
Given the confidence Snapchat has put in ChatGPT, it is safe to say that the company might be bringing this to all users going forward. At the same time, it is important to highlight the volatility and uncertainty surrounding AI in general. In case you remember, Google's AI Chatbot was allegedly having fear, a strong feeling, about being turned off one day. Similarly, Bing's AI chatbot went through a meltdown a couple of days ago, showing how strange AI can behave and, sometimes, even be manipulated. You can read more about My AI here.
Whatever the case might be, we can only hope Snapchat's My AI does not turn out to be malicious or broken. We would have to wait and see once it finally comes out. Meanwhile, let us know what you think about this integration.
