The Snapdragon 855 was been reported incessantly to be Qualcomm’s first ever 7nm FinFET chipset, thus crossing the performance and efficiency limitations and bringing several benefits to high-end smartphones of the future. However, the chipset manufacturer might be mulling a name change for the upcoming SoC and according to a reporter, the Snapdragon 855 might not end up being the official name of the company’s first silicon to be made on the next-generation architecture.

Qualcomm Might Change the Snapdragon 855 Name in Order to Avoid Confusion Over Chipsets Found in Smartphones and Those Found in Notebooks

Heading over to Twitter, Roland Quandt, a reporter from WinFuture states that Qualcomm could be thinking of changing the name of its 7nm SoC so that customers and OEMs might not find any confusion when it comes to separating the chips’ names found in smartphones and notebooks. Thanks to the ‘Windows 10 on ARM’ initiative, Qualcomm’s chipsets are now readily found in notebooks and hybrid machines, but it will take them a long time to get that proper traction in the market thanks to overwhelming competition.

For the time being, the Snapdragon 850serves as the company’s current champion, fueling notebooks running Windows 10 and performing noticeably better than the Snapdragon 835. Of course, Qualcomm is expected to carry on the line of succession with the launch of the Snapdragon 1000, which once again, is being rumoured not to be the official name of the SoC, though it has been reported to be competing against Intel’s processors found in ultrabooks when it officially launches.

Seems like Qualcomm has a new naming scheme coming. Snapdragon 855 is not what the final name will be - need to do more research on this, but I think they are switching the chip names to a different scheme to separate chips being destined for mobile from the ones for use in PCs.

Another rumour states that even before the official launch of the Snapdragon 855, Qualcomm has been tweaking the Snapdragon 865, possibly because it can be ready to ship out orders for its hardware partners as early as possible. While nothing is confirmed at this point, there is a possibility that the official name of the first 7nm SoC from Qualcomm will be called Snapdragon 865. However, the reporter did state that he will have to dig deeper to find out what is really happening.

While the Snapdragon 855 and Snapdragon 850 might not be difficult for those who keep their ears close to the industry, it could create problems for a lot of Qualcomm's partners.
