An earlier engineering sample of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 showed terribly disappointing multi-core results, but an updated version has apparently made a monumental jump in multiple categories, according to the latest rumor. It is said that several versions of the upcoming SoC are being tested, and the current one’s CPU and GPU clock speeds have been shared by a tipster, along with some performance numbers showing that it is a bit faster than Apple’s M2.

Though the single-core score target for Qualcomm is rumored to be 1,800, Revegnus shares on Twitter that the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 was only able to obtain 1,300 in the same category while beating the M2 in the multi-core segment with a score of 10,000. This makes Qualcomm’s flagship chipset for notebooks just slightly faster than the M2, but since there are various versions being tested, it is possible that newer variants showcase better results.

While the tipster does not mention the number of performance and efficiency cores of the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4, he does provide CPU and GPU clock speed details. For the performance cores, this particular version is operating at 3.00GHz, while the power-efficiency cores are running at 2.30GHz. As for the graphics processor, which is said to be the Adreno 740, it has a clock speed of 1.00GHz. This configuration was divided into eight performances and four efficiency ones, so having additional high-performance cores likely allowed the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 to beat the M2, which only has four performance cores. However, the earlier version was said to run its performance cores at 3.40GHz, while the remaining power-efficiency ones were reportedly clocked at 2.50GHz, indicating that the latest version is significantly slower.

Qualcomm may be attempting to find a balance of performance and battery life to help it market the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 as a worthy Apple M-series competitor, so at this time, we do not know the ‘exact’ specifications of the final product. However, we do know that the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 will feature Qualcomm’s custom Oryon cores, giving it a possible edge against the competition.
