Feb 12, 2026 3:02 AM

Thieves can permanently lock iPhone users out of their Apple ID if they get a hold of your passcode. While users can set up a complex alphanumeric passcode, it is always a threat to users. A new report has been published that highlights how users can be locked out of their accounts through Apple's recovery key security option. Apple has responded to the situation, stating that it is always working to enhance user privacy and security. Scroll down to read more details on the subject.

Thieves can use Apple's Recovery Key Security option to lock you out of your Apple ID account

There has been an increasing number of reports by users siting that their iPhone was stolen after a social setting. What this means is that thieves can spy and snoop on your iPhone's passcode to gain access to your sensitive information, which includes photos, videos, as well as your financial apps. In a new report published by Nocole Nguyen and Joanna Stern, thieves can easily change your Apple ID password in the Settings app. If someone gains access to your secret passcode, Face ID, or Touch ID does not have a barrier set to stop it from happening.

Additional threats include the ability to turn off Find My iPhone, which will make the device untraceable. The report mentions that unauthorized users can reset the 28-character recovery key that allows users to gain access to their accounts. With no way to access your Apple ID or the device, thieves can gain access to your complete information, including banking apps and Apple Pay. This will allow the muggers to transfer money to their accounts without any issues.

Apple has not set parameters in place to protect your Apple ID and all of your information. If Apple allows users to set up a passcode for Apple ID reset that is different from the device passcode, it could help add an additional layer of security for private information. Apple executives state that the company is working to eliminate threats and protect user accounts.

If you want to protect your account from similar threats, it is best to use Face ID or Touch ID when you are out socializing. Additionally, it is always better to set an alphanumeric code rather than a standard numeric code. This is because alphanumeric code is a combination of numbers, letters, and characters. We will share more details on the matter as soon as further information is available.
