Top Apple Executives Are Skeptical Of AR Headset As Company Compromised On Design And Features-February 2024
Feb 12, 2026 3:10 AM

Apple is set to host its WWDC 2023 event on June 5, where it will see fit to announce iOS 17, watchOS 10, and a boatload of other updates and changes. The company is also expected to announce new hardware at the event, which includes the upcoming 15-inch MacBook Air and its highly anticipated AR Headset. Now, it is being reported that some Apple executives are skeptical of the AR Headset and the compromises it made for an early launch. Scroll down to read more details on the matter and what you should be looking forward to.

Tim Cook and Craig Frederighi kept their distance from the AR Headset's development process

According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, senior Apple executives, including Tim Cook and Craig Frederighi, did not involve themselves in the development of the AR Headset. The AR Headset that the company is planning to launch next month is very different from the one imagined initially. The headset was initially envisaged as "a pair of unobtrusive eyeglasses" that users can wear all day. However, with technological limitations and resources, the selected design is similar to the ski goggles.

The reason why Tim Cook did not engage in the development was his view that the headset should emphasize nonobtrusive AR features. This led the developmental team to remain indecisive when it comes to designs and features. It also frustrated the staff involved in the operations, which became the reason for the delays. Apple's senior vice president for hardware technologies, Johny Scrouj, is secretly skeptical of the AR Headset, calling it a science project. He states that the chips part of the development could detract the company from iPhone chips, where returns are far higher.

Another reason why the company has delayed its highly anticipated AR Headset is due to hardware and software issues. The design of the headset is reimagined in accordance with technological limitations. As for software, Apple is consistently working with its software team and third-party developers to ready apps for the headset before the device is available to the public.

Apple wants to position the AR Headset as a product that users wear all the time. It will carry out some of the major features of the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. What this means is that the device will include features such as web browsing, video calls, gaming, workouts, and much more. However, this could ultimately decrease demand for other products. Nonetheless, it is too early to draw conclusions since we have not observed a market response yet. Apple believes that the AR Headset could turn into a product as big as the Apple Watch or the iPad.

Initially, the device will be priced higher as it would be oriented toward developers, content creators, and professionals. However, the company is working on cheaper variants of the headset as well. We have also previously heard that the AR Headset was well-received by testers. This is all there is to it, folks. We will update you on the matter as soon as further details are available.
