Feb 12, 2026 6:25 AM

Xiaomi plans to launch the Mi 8 instead of the Mi 7 on May 31.There was certainly a massive ball of confusion related to why the company chose to name the smartphone Mi 8 instead of Mi 7 since that would have been the correct order. Well, Xiaomihas now explained what prompted it to skip the number 7.

Xiaomi Mi 8 Sports a Vast Number of Improvements Over Previous-Generation Models, Hence the Name Change Was Incorporated

Xiaomi shared a new picture that has a huge number 7 written on it through its official Weibo page. Below the number 7, it reads Mi 8. The caption on the picture says that the upcoming smartphone is a huge improvement over the previous generation, that’s why the company thought it was apt to just skip the number 7.

The launch of the new flagship is also coinciding with the company’s 8th anniversary, so maybe Xiaomi wantstomark the anniversary by naming the upcoming flagship asthe Mi 8. The phone will be unveiled in an event on May 31,along with other devices.

Lei Jun, the company’s CEO, had confirmed that several products will be introduced on May 31. The Mi Band 3 fitness tracker could also be one of them. It has already been teased by the company and several rumors have also surfaced so the event seems the perfect opportunity to officially unveil the device. Xiaomi had also confirmed that MIUI 10 will also be showcased at the eventand that the Mi 8 will be running with the latest UI when it is officially shipped to the masses.

The Xiaomi Mi 8 will reportedly have a metal and glass design, but we may also see a ceramic variant, which should carry a higher price tag. It will be powered by the Snapdragon 845 chipset and will have 6GB of RAMfor the base model.

The flagship smartphone will also support wireless chargingand will be thefirst to feature 3D facial scanning system, similar to the one seen on iPhone X. It will have a wide notchto house the sensors required for 3D face scanning. If leaked specificationssheets and pictures are togo by, the company will release two sizesof the phone, but we honestly think that different spec models are only going to be sold.
