YouTube Adds HDR Video Support For Better Quality
YouTube Adds HDR Video Support For Better Quality-May 2024
May 2, 2025 12:46 AM

Yesterday, YouTube received a major quality update with the addition of High Dynamic Range (HDR) video support. The platform already supports HD and 4K videos which were added years ago, but this time the update is all about colors. Let's see some more details on the HDR support added in YouTube.

YouTube Adds Support For HDR Video Playback

If you're not familiar with HDR, it allows for a more greater range of tones between the darkest and brightest part of the content. The functionality allows the panels with right hardware specifications to display a range of tones and supports a wider color gamut than usual. The by product is a display that shows more realistic range of blacks and white.

The next big thing after 4K resolution is HDR, which is widely adopted in new TV sets and gaming consoles by Sony and Microsoft. However, you cannot watch everything in HDR video quality. There is lack of HDR content that individuals can watch.

Since YouTube has touted HDR, it wants content creators to shift from high resolution videos to HDR. YouTube being the biggest video platform would do good in terms of the availability of HDR content as well. This is due to the fact that HDR content is not widely and readily available to users. According to YouTube, it's working with top content creators and channels to fill out the company's HDR catalog in the months to come.

YouTube has not been shy of adopting the streaming and display technology. Since HDR is the way to go, it will allow the company to go head-to-head against other video streaming platforms like Amazon and Netflix. YouTube's adoption of the HDR technology will basically bring the technology to the masses. This includes content creators as well as viewers.

Currently, you will require an external hardware to view any HDR content, such as the new Chromecast Ultra. Moreover, it's also available on Samsung's 2016 4K TVs. However, it will support native HDR playback from the built-in app in some time in the near future.

It won't be long when HDR videos become the norm if there are products for playing and capturing support the technology. YouTube HDR video support will definitely a go a long way.

This is it for now, folks. What are your thoughts on YouTube's HDR video support? Do you think it's the right time for the company to introduce HDR on its platform? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
