Microsoft Was Readying Macs, Office Space And Other Accommodations To Help Former OpenAI Employees Adjust Quickly-November 2024
Nov 2, 2025 1:39 PM

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella had announced shortly after the firing of Sam Altmanthat the software giant would be recruiting the former Chief Executive, Greg Brockman, and other colleagues to lead a new advanced AI research team. To ease the new recruits’ transition to the new roles, Microsoft was not readying any of its Surface devices for the team, but new Macs, hence proving that it is the superior product line for a wide range of tasks.

OpenAI employees were likely using MacBooks at their current position, but given the latest news of Altman rejoining the startup, the new machines will no longer be needed

As reported by Axios, Microsoft was in the middle of setting up office space for former OpenAI employees, with the location being just 10 minutes away from the startup’s primary building in San Francisco. In addition to allocating space, the software giant also purchased Macs for the newer employees, allowing them to get started immediately without facing any roadblocks.

A source familiar with the matter said Microsoft is setting up space in the San Francisco offices of LinkedIn, which are just a 10-minute drive from OpenAI’s main building in SF. The company is readying work spaces, training clusters and Macs to ensure OpenAI's workers can hit the ground running, the source said.

What is interesting to note here is that Microsoft readied a rival company’s product instead of its own, suggesting that the company is secretly aware that Apple produces better hardware for various businesses and customer bases, such as creative professionals, programmers, codes, and others. It is also possible that these former OpenAI employees themselves suggested that they preferred these machines as their daily drivers.

With Apple’s latest M-series chips found in various Macs, the California-based giant has optimized its custom silicon for various applications while also delivering performance and battery endurance that the Surface family cannot compete with right now. However, none of that will be necessary as Sam Altman has been reinstated as OpenAI’s CEO, so those employees will likely resume using Macs at their original premises.
